History vue-tendecarlines2

Quoted in the 11th century under its current name, Tende was in the Vintimille County. In 1261 Pierre-Guillaume of Vintimille, Lord of Tende, wed the young Eastern Greek Emperor, Jean Lascaris’ sister. He then took the name of Vintimille-Lascaris. In 1581, the County of Tende was won by the House of Savoie. In 1860, the commune of Tende, as that of La Brigue, was not included in the joining of France, even though the dwellers wished to be. The return to France followed the peace treaty with Italy on the 10th February 1947, confirmed by an internationally controlled referendum.

Tende rejoining France restored a natural geographical unit, the Italian border once again along the mountain crest, water devide with the Piemonte region. The Tende district is the largest in the Alpes Maritime (Nice region). Saint Dalmas de Tende’s history is also that of Tende, always being dependant of the later. There once existed an old Priory of Saint Dalmas de Pedona that went through many reconversions after the French Revolution and was finally re-occupied by a congregation of nuns.

Since 1967, Professor Henry de Lumley and his teams have been working on noting and moulding the prehistoric engraved stones found on the Vallee des Merveilles and Vallee de Fantanable sites (mouldings on exhibit at the Musee des Merveilles in Tende).
