The Notre-Dame des Fontaines chapel is located 4km east of La Brigue village. Standing at the foot of the Collardente Pass, linking Tende to Taggia and San Remo.
During the 15th Century the Notre Dame des Fontaines sanctuary wasn't as isolated as today, the major Collardente mule path leading to the Italian Liguria region or the coast passed by the chapel. It’s reputation attracted many pilgrims from around the region (Liguria, Piemonte, Provence).
The first document concerning the chapel dates from 17th November 1375, a notary deed, indicating the building’s administrators.
Built upon intermittent water springs, many miracles were attributed to the spring’s eruptions, giving the chapel its name.
According to old legend, La Brigue’s natural spring water dried up –
surely due to an earth quake. Unable to water the fields, the villagers
would build a chapel in the name of the Virgin Mary, should she give
the water back.
The water returned and the villagers of La Brigue built a sanctuary in thanks for the miracle.
The interior décor of the building, covering everything, was probably
carried out by La Brigue community, with the help of pilgrim’s
donations.
